The Mother Church

of the Diocese of Laredo

Message from our Rector

My dear parishioners,

It has been almost 20 years since I was ordained a priest to the service of Jesus Christ for the Diocese of Laredo at San Agustín Cathedral. It never crossed my mind that one day I would return to the house where I was born to the priesthood, and moreover, as its Rector. I took on the responsibility with joy and entrusting myself to the Most Holy Trinity and to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Seven years have passed since we set in motion our spiritual restoration, through which, together and hand in hand with Our Lord Jesus, we decided to say “yes” to promoting this mission with joy. All united in faith and full of hope, with hearts ready to continue the mission entrusted by the Holy Father St. John Paul II when he erected our Diocese of Laredo on August 9, 2000, and protected by the intercession of our Patron Saint St. Augustine, we began the physical restoration of our beloved temple with the motto: San Agustín Cathedral: Our History, Our Faith, Our Cathedral.

More than three years ago, after two years of arduous work and with the collaboration of many brothers and sisters in Christ, the restoration works of the Cathedral, the Mother Church of the Diocese of Laredo and symbol of our diocesan unity, were completed. San Agustín Cathedral represents our deep sense of faith and praise and brings us all together at the same table to share the love of Christ.

Today we move forward united in faith and love, creating together the same vision. We are a living Church formed of people of all ages and where each one finds his or her place. I invite you to join us and to experience being part of a Eucharistic community that loves the Lord, present and alive among us, as we celebrate the sacraments, in every apostolic endeavor, and in the faces of all of us who belong to this great family, the Cathedral of San Agustín.

United in the Most Holy Trinity,

Very Reverend Idén J. Bello M., JCL, Rector.
